Longing for Dawn est un jeune groupe d‚outre Atlantique (Québec) officiant dans un style doom atmosphérique. Le tout début d‚année a vu le groupe sortir cet album intitulé « One Lonely Path ». Il s‚agit de la première trace discographique du groupe de Frédéric Arbour (qui sort cet album sur son label). Le digipack, tout de bleu avec une légère pointe de couleurs chaudes, est pas mal du tout et montre qu‚un soin tout particulier a été apporté au côté visuel.
La voix gutturale à souhait de Stefan déclame des textes voués à la désolation et à la mélancolie alors que les guitares sont aussi tranchantes qu‚un couteau affûté et que la basse est très lourde, le tout accompagné par une batterie dans le même ordre d‚idée. La musique sait se faire un peu plus aérienne comme sur l‚intro tout en douceur de « One Lonely Path » mais la lourdeur réapparaît vite cependant. Ce côté atmosphérique est assuré par les parties de claviers que l‚on peut entendre sur le premier titre de l‚album par exemple. La première moitié de « Lethal » est très bonne et plonge l‚auditeur dans un état apathique, léthargique. Il faut reconnaître que le titre du morceau est sacrément bien choisi vu l‚ambiance dégagée tout au long de celui-ci. Le travail mélodique des guitares secondées par de discrètes nappes de clavier est vraiment bon et l‚on se sent glisser petit à petit durant l‚écoute de ce titre. Je trouve que c‚est sur ce genre de passage que le groupe se montre le plus efficace d‚ailleurs et qu‚il s‚agit de ce fait du meilleur titre de l‚album. C‚est lui qui m‚a permis de mieux appréhender la musique proposée par Longing for Dawn. Les morceaux (hormis le dernier) sont longs et peuvent paraîtrent interminables pour les non-initiés. Car, malgré d‚évidentes qualités, difficile pour ces derniers de réussir à pénétrer cet univers particulier. Une sorte de malaise, de mal-être se ressent à l‚écoute de ces cinq titres, un sentiment de suffocation qui vous prend sans véritablement vous quitter (même si je pense que ceci pourrait encore être mieux exploité). L‚album se termine donc comme je le disais sur un titre bien plus court (moins de cinq minutes) qui semble aussi plus énergique que les autres.
Bon, j‚ai préféré cet album à bien d‚autres réalisations du même style que j‚ai pu écouté : il y a ici plus d‚éléments mélancoliques propres à toucher ma sensibilité. Disons que je considère ce groupe comme une sympathique surprise et qu‚étant donné ma réaction je pense que les fans de ce type de musique seront eux comblés par cette sortie. Les autres peuvent toujours tenter leur chance mais ce ne sera pas partie facile.

Could have easily been called Longing For Death... such is the excruciating pain and melancholy emanating from this album. Longing For Dawn is dark, wretched and dismal as only a doom metal band influenced by Thergothon, Thorr's Hammer and Disembowelment can be. The Montreal bunch draws so much pain out of every single note that its input/suffering output efficiency is off the charts. No riffs, no bass lines, no choruses; Longing For Dawn is slow doom that will hit even one at the bottom of the abyss below the belt and drag him even lower. The band's aforementioned influences have done this type of sluggish and painful drone before. The growls, the intermixed clean cry of woe, distorted chords and dropped notes of suffering are not new. Still, LFD is as compelling as a misty day in the throes of death and dying. Frédéric Arbour n'est pas du genre à laisser les choses aller. Fondateur du déja mythique label Canadien Cyclic Law (pourvoyeur de sonorités Dark ambient et industrielles de très bel aloi), notre homme est aussi membre du projet Doom Metal Longing For Dawn, dont Arbour nous offre les travaux sous couvert de Twilight Foundation, récente sous division du label originel. Et pour un coup d'essai, on ne peut pas dire que Longing For Dawn, n'a pas mis de sont côté tous les moyens.Les voix de Stefan Laroche, gutturales ou plus
rentrées, parcourent des paysages de desolation totale, rythmés bien évidemment à deux à l'heure et baignant dans de sépulcrales ambiances.Finement orchestré (les couches de claviers se fondent totalement dans le mix), le doom metal de Longing For Dawn bénéficie d'une approche à la fois rude et mystique ("Lethal", majestueux). Sa dimension funéraire fait qu'il s'assimilera davantage aux canons développées par les groupes de seconde génération type Shape of Despair (mais à un niveau de production inférieur) qu'aux tenants actuel du Doom "root" façon Reverend bizzare ou Cathedral. Dans le genre, assez remarquable et suffisament en tout cas pour qu'on souhaite voir en ce sous-label de Cyclic Law une véritable promesse de développement et d'avenir. Atmospheric doom. I love this kinda stuff late at night when I’m packing orders or doing paperwork. For some reason, it chills me out, gives me that cathartic feeling that only low n’ slow can bring. Maybe low frequencies at loud volumes serve as a serotonin and dopamine receptor agonists. Who knows. Newcomers into the even newer and unexplored category known as 'atmospheric doom', Longing For Dawn mix the The Funeral Orchestra-on-Sunn O)))/Asva kinda avant-doom sound with more tried n’ true downer genres like funeral and death/doom. Minor key melodies intertwine with rhythmic rumbles that are birthed and subsequently decayed. Atmosphere is supplied by odd (and effective) use of electronics into melancholy hypnotic soundscapes. All of this devoid of accoutrements that usually amount to overdone bombast - no tinkling keys, Valkyrie vocals in a distant background or heavy leaning on string-based symphonics. Not something you’d listen to if you’re in a hurry, in the mood for a snappy chorus or memorable riff, One Lonely Path is a solipsist’s soundtrack for late nights, or a doomer’s equivalent of headphone music. Doom Metal is having a renaissance these days, and several really good releases in the genre is being put out, split between labels throughout the world. Longing For Dawn are from Canada and so is the label releasing the album. Twilight Foundation is the sub-label of Cyclic Law, (known for releases of dark ambient, industrial, neoclassic music etc.) which is run by Frederic Arbour. Same Arbour plays guitar in this band, he provides the "atmospherics" and also makes most of the music. "One Lonely Path" has become a very heavy, dark and sloooow paced album. It is evident that alot of Doom bands are not completely able to pull off this kind of tempo. The vocals are dark and guttural with an edge, no lullabyes here..... As mentioned the tempo on this record is incredibly slow, but the riffs are good and the drummer manages to stand out eventhough he has to keep a very slow beat. The sound is very good and fits this style of music, no clinical bullshit here. The album contains 5 long songs making the album over 50 minutes long, fans of this type of Doom Metal will surely cherish this release for a long time. If I had to mention another band in the same genre, I would maybe say Morgion, they are in the same field when it comes to the pace as well as the vocals. What Longing For Dawn has got that Morgion might not have is the sound manipulation executed by Arbour, which is reminiscent to short pieces of dark ambient. This is an album that will be played again and again, there is so much atmosphere in this type of metal that you get speechless and thoughtful.... it is simply inspiring. There are zero happy notes here and the message is hardly positive and that`s the way it should be, here reigns emptiness and darkness, the light is never present and the loneliness that runs through everything can easily feel suffocating, that`s for sure. Within seconds of the opening chords on One Lonely Path, the album’s funereal pace, underscored by songs averaging over ten minutes a piece, makes it clear that this is no speed metal record. Purveyors of “atmospheric doom,” Quebec’s Longing for Dawn weave a melancholy, Bride-ian gloom, and offset the steady grey with disquieting sonic effects. Smooth layers of synth strings underlie much harder-edged guitar riffs and mournful leads, accented by a deep throated growl, but periodically it all drops out, leaving an alien swirl of sound to fill in the empty space. J’ai l’impression que le doom atmosphérique se fait rare ces derniers temps… les gens veulent-ils de la rapidité ? Quoi qu’il en soit, Longing For Dawn fait dans la lenteur, la lourdeur et la profondeur abyssale. Comme on dit en Suisse, il n’y a pas le feu au lac (oui et Ovomaltine c’est de la dynamite, on sait !) et pourtant, vlan dans les dents, ce groupe n’est pas helvétique, il nous vient du pays des caribous ! Et ce premier album des Canadiens ravage tout ! Une voix gutturale d’outre-tombe, des riffs éléphantesques, une batterie pachydermique et des plages de synthés pesants amènent à un résultat suicidaire à souhait. Des titres tels que ‘Lethal’ ou ‘Total Abscence Of Light’ résument totalement la situation. ‘One Lonely Path’, c’est pas loin d’une heure de désappointement, de tristesse, de mélancolie et de noirceur. Peut-être un brin pas assez varié, ce disque est néanmoins très bon. [Oxana]

If I had to describe the music of this band with just one word I would have to say "darkness". If you give me the chance to add more words I could say "heaviness", I could say "depression". This band is pure doom metal coming directly from Canada, and their music has all the elements that have made this style so appreciated: slower tempos, graveyard vocals. Plus here we have also some keyboards adding even more sadness to the music. The guitars throw heavy chords and riffs and melancholic melodies are developed over them creating this album that is ideal to cut your veins and let the blood flow. Four of the five tracks are over ten minutes long, so the band has plenty of time to develope really well each of the compositions. The sound is really clear and loud and if you put this at a high volume you will appreciate all the details that the band has delivered here. Doom metal at its best !!!!! Federico Marongiu

Here is the first record by Montreal's Longing for Dawn. It ends up being really smart left of center doom. Not like Sabbath doom or boredom invoking "stoner" doom, but like weird, atonal, one-note-bent-hellishly out of tune "anti-riff" guitar riffing interspersed with trippy, long treble drones. Despite the usual death vocals, this comes off as fairly original. Sparsely and carefully composed, maybe having some Bethlehem influence. I hear ambient Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Coil, and lonely, suicidal winds howling across the plains in the middle of the night. Evocative, interesting to listen to and zone. Perhaps this music could move more places melodically, but whatever. This is beautiful, really. Score one for Canada! (8/10)

Comme s'il n'avait pas assez d'occupations Frédéric Arbour, grand manitou de Cyclic Law, vient de créer Twilight Foundation, un side-label destiné à promouvoir la musique de Longing For Dawn, groupe dans lequel il officie aux guitares et aux nappes synthétiques. Ce premier album au superbe design (nous sommes toujours un peu dans la 'famille' Cyclic Law ne l'oublions pas) nous plonge dans la lenteur et la lourdeur d'un doom-metal atmosphérique de grande qualité qui rappelle sans que le groupe ait à s'en offusquer la musique des danois de Saturnus. Le soin apporté aux atmosphères ambient rejaillit sur l'ensemble de ce 'One lonely path', intégrées parfaitement à la structure guitare/basse/batterie typique du genre. Certains titres comme 'Total abscence of light' sont d'une noirceur vraiment suffocante, contrastant avec les éléments acoustiques de toute beauté notamment sur le magnifique morceau-titre qui clôt l'album. 'Ashes of innocence' est une petite merveille qui réunit tous ces éléments en une longue plainte déchirante et mélancolique au possible. Le chant essentiellemnt guttural offre un peu de répit ça et là en s'éclaircissant dans une volonté d'alléger un fardeau des plus pesants. Les amateurs de doom seront à leurs aises avec ce 'One lonely path', très bien produit et pensé : certes la personnalité du projet doit encore se préciser, mais les atouts techniques et émotionnels de Longing For Dawn en font un outsider de premier ordre. De toutes manières, voilà un groupe sur lequel vous pourrez compter pour présenter une musique de qualité, sincère et sans détours.

Als „Canada’s unique atmospheric Doom Metal“ wird mir das Album „One Lonely Path“ angepriesen. Ich muss mich insofern geschlagen geben, dass mir weder spontan, noch auf die Schnelle, noch überhaupt eine weitere kanadische Band des gleichen Schlags wie LONGING FOR DAWN einfällt. Sollte irgendwann einmal „Konkurrenz“ auftauchen, hat sie es allerdings reichlich schwer, das mächtige Debut der fünf Kanadier zu toppen. Im Jahre 2002 fanden sich die Mitstreiter um Hauptsongwriter Frédéric Arbour zusammen und fingen an, die ersten schwermütigen Klänge zu erschaffen. Ein gutes Jahr später fing man mit den Aufnahmen der Songs an, die sich sporadisch über ein weiteres Jahr hinzogen. Schlussendlich wurde das eigene Label Twilight Foundation (ein Sub-Label von Cyclic Law) aus der Taufe gehoben, unter dessen Flagge künftig die Werke von LONGING FOR DAWN erscheinen sollen. Die lange Schaffensphase hat dem Album sichtlich gut getan. LONGING FOR DAWN spielen atmosphärischen und melancholischen Doom Metal der langsamsten Art, am ehesten zu vergleichen mit Bands wie THERGOTHON und SKEPTICISM. Auch die Bezeichnung Funeral Doom erscheint hier durchaus angebracht. Die Stimmung auf dem Album ist zwar vorherrschend düster und endzeitlich, lässt aber auch andere Assoziationen als den heimischen Friedhof oder das eigene Lebensende zu. Gerade ein Song wie „Ashes of Innocence“ versprüht den Hauch von Ewigkeit und Endlosigkeit, und doch gleichzeitig auch die Leere und Hoffnungslosigkeit, die auf dem Album präsent ist. Kennt jemand zufällig den Kurzfilm ‚Quest’? „One Lonely Path“ wäre der perfekte Soundtrack für die trostlose Wüstenlandschaft, in der jegliches Leben verschwunden ist, und nur noch eigenwillige Maschinen ihren routinierten Mechanismen folgen. Der einsame Pfad, der letzte Funken Hoffnung, das letzte Zeichen des Lichts, bevor wir als Hörer in ein tiefes schwarzes Loch der Ungewissheit fallen. Besonders faszinierend finde ich die emotionale Erhabenheit, die die Songs ausströmen. Es ist nicht zu vergleichen mit dem letzten Gang zu einem Begräbnis, einem Ort der Endgültigkeit. Es ist aber auch nicht zu vergleichen mit dieser zutiefst traurigen Stimmung einhergehend mit suizidalen Gedanken. „One Lonely Path“ steht über allem, als wüsste es die Wahrheit, die Antwort auf die Fragen, auf die es keine Antwort gibt, Antworten, die wir Sterblichen nach dem eigenen Ableben erwarten zu erfahren. Es ist diese Gelassenheit eines weisen alten Mannes, der sich in seinem Leben nichts mehr beweisen muss, der nichts mehr zu fürchten hat. LONGING FOR DAWN erreichen diese Stimmung mit oftmals schon drone-ähnlichen Gitarren, einem ultra-langsamen Schlagzeug und atmosphärischen Flächensounds, dezent und untermalend eingesetzt, ohne aufdringlich zu werden. Dazu die tiefe, grunzende Stimme des Sängers Stefan Laroche, der auch die Lyrics der Songs verfasst hat. Die knapp einstündige Reise auf dem einsamen Pfad zieht sich über fünf Songs, die zu keinem Zeitpunkt in Monotonie verfallen, und auch nur in einer Einheit am besten zu „genießen“ sind. Der Hörer sollte also nicht versuchen, einen Kurztrip zu unternehmen, sondern sich auf den ganzen Weg einlassen, um in die Klangwelt von LONGING FOR DAWN einzutauchen. Fazit: Die Höchstwertung ist bei einem Album derartiger Qualität Pflicht, Liebhaber von melancholischem, atmosphärischen Doom sollten hier unbedingt zugreifen. Lasst Euch „One Lonely Path“ nicht entgehen, damit auch ihr zukünftig wisst, wer Kanada’s einzigartige Doom-Metal-Band ist!

On m’a vanté l’album « One Lonely Path » comme étant le « Canada’s unique atmospheric Doom Metal ». Sur ce point, je dois me défendre de ne connaître, même en y réfléchissant bien, aucun autre groupe canadien du même genre que LONGING FOR DAWN. Un jour, peut-être, la concurrence émergera, toutefois, il lui sera plutôt difficile d’atteindre les débuts puissants de ce quintette canadien.En 2002, les membres se réunissent autour de l’auteur-compositeur principal du groupe, Frédéric Arbour, et créent les premières sonorités mélancoliques. Un an plus tard, le groupe commence l’enregistrement des chansons qui s’étirera sporadiquement sur une année supplémentaire. Finalement, le label Twilight Foundation (un label cousin de Cyclic Law) a été fondé sous laquelle étiquette les futures oeuvres de LONGING FOR DAWN doivent paraître.La longue période de création a visiblement bien fait à l’album. LONGING FOR DAWN joue un doom métal atmosphérique et mélancolique de la manière la plus lente, à comparer avant tout avec des groupes comme THERGOTHON et SKEPTICISM. Ici, la désignation Funeral Doom apparaît également tout à fait opportune., L’atmosphère qui domine sur l’album est certes sombre et infinie, mais elle permet aussi d’autres associations comme par exemple le cimetière local ou encore la fin de sa vie. La chanson „Ashes of Innocence" répand justement le souffle de l’éternité et de l’infini, mais aussi en même temps le vide et le désespoir, qui lui est présent sur l’album. Est-ce que quelqu’un connaît par hasard le film « Quest » ? « One Lonely Path » serait la bande originale parfaite pour illustrer le sinistre paysage désertique dans lequel toute vie est disparue et où seules les machines obstinées suivent leurs mécanismes expérimentés. C’est le seul chemin, la dernière lueur d’espoir, le dernier signe de la lumière avant que nous, ceux qui écoutent cette musique, tombions dans le trou noir et profond de l’inconscience. Je trouve particulièrement fascinant la noblesse émotionnelle qui se dégage des chansons. Ce n’est pas comparable avec la dernière visite d’un cimetière ou au lieu où plus rien n’existe. Ce n’est pas non plus comparable avec ces ambiances profondément tristes accompagnées de pensées suicidaires. « One Lonely Path» est au-dessus de tout comme s’il savait la vérité, comme s’il connaissait la réponse aux questions auxquelles il n’y a pas de réponse, ces réponses que nous, mortels, connaîtront seulement après notre propre mort. C’est plutôt ce calme d’un vieil homme sage qui n’a plus à se prouver et qui n’a plus rien à craindre. LONGING FOR DAWN atteint cette atmosphère en utilisant à maintes reprises des guitares au son bourdonnant, un rythnme de batterie ultra-lent et et des sons ambiants atmosphériques, discrets et bien agrémentés, sans devenir agressant. Pour accompagner le tout s’ajoute la voix grave et rauque du chanteur Stefan Laroche, qui écrit aussi les paroles des chansons. Le voyage de tout juste une heure sur le chemin de la solitude nous entraîne le temps de cinq chansons qui ne tombent à aucun moment dans la monotonie, et, l’idéal est de les « savourer » une par une. Celui ou celle qui écoute ne doit pas non plus essayer d’entreprendre un simple « trip », mais plutôt de se laisser entraîner dans tout le chemin afin de se plonger complètement dans l’univers sonore de LONGING FOR DAWN.Fait : Donner la meilleure note est un devoir lorsqu’on a affaire à un album d’une telle qualité. Les amateurs de doom atmosphérique et mélancolique doivent absolument sauter sur cette occasion. Ne laisser pas « One Lonely Path » passer, de cette façon vous saurez qui est le groupe doom métal unique au Canada !

For sure Canada has one of the best metal scenes worldwide. Earlier this year, a band with the name Longing For Dawn, has released its debut album through Twilight Foundation and to be more specific the album's release date was 17th February.By the name of the band, you may have already predicted that Longing For Dawn, plays a mixture of Doom metal with a lot of atmospheric metal elements. The vocals are mainly inclining to death metal and the speed is so slow that if you hear it late at night you will certainly fall asleep. Of course this isn't exactly true, because Longing for Dawn, knows very well how to attract your attention with their compositions. Five tracks and fifty three minutes of music, can assure you that the songs are long, but at the same time well worked and well structured. Maybe the only "negative" in this album are the vocals, but I think this is a matter of personal taste. I prefer "clean" to "aggressive" vocals when it comes to doom metal albums. Besides that, everything is almost perfect, with a very good package, great production and all fans of doom metal will be happy for this month. If you read our reviews often you will read a lot of doom metal ones. So take your time and relish the doom metal holocaust.Rate: 9/10 Antonis Maglaras

A Sub-label from Cyclic Law for what seems to be for Funeral Doom and other Doom metal based music. The 1st release is by Cyclic Law Founder Frederic Arbour. This is some stellar Funeral. Doom death from the intial track mix Neurosis, Mindrot and elements of Thergothon ( the clean guitars and spoken vocals esp). The Organs and Harsh vocals are very Mindrot and the arrangments are the Neurosis to me. There are truly very few of the new guard of Doom bands I really enjoy most are 3rd rate drone or skepticism want to bee's. Longing for Dawn are not. To be totally honest they may have brought me out of doom retirement to actually loving this style again and writing some new doom material myself. Longing for Dawn is 5 tracks of crushing Doom metal the way it always suppose to be done. Slow , Epic , Brutal and Emotional.  Peaceville glory days revised here my friends. (Clint Listings)

There is doom metal and there is doooooom metal. Well, Longing For Dawn definitely fits the second definition; their music is extremely slow and depressing and reminds me of bands like Evoken and Morgion. "One Lonely Path" is the debut album of this Canadian band and contains 5 songs with an average length of over 10 minutes. Not one single spark of light can be found in any of those songs though; even a little bit of hope seems to be too much to ask of Longing For Dawn, who have created a morbid atmosphere of death and despair. Solemn drumming, spoken words, deep growls, monumental riffing and melancholic guitar leads: all elements of true doom are there. But there is more, for Longing For Dawn adds some dark ambient and sludge elements too, creating a sound that sometimes refers to Isis. Lovers of sludge and doom will know just what to do with "One Lonely Path"...

Longing for Dawn is the Doom Metal project of Frederic Arbour (Cyclic Law label, Instincts, Visions) and comprises 5 tracks of crushing doom metal.Mostly guitar driven but there are some synthesizer/piano throughout some of the songs and also sound manipulation. What struck me initially was the vocal style which for some reason reminds me of Mourning Beloveth's first two releases. A combination of spoken clean vocals and brutal grim vocals (most dominant). The production is quite good and is well put together.
Opening track "Access to Deliverance is very heavy and atmospheric at times. All songs have some atmospheric qualities to them. And each track clocks in close to or over 10 mins in length. Hence an approx. 54 deluge of crushing doom. Remaining tracks (in order) are Lethal, Total Abscence of Light, Ashes of Innocence and One Lonely Path rounding it out.
Heavy rhythm, tasteful slow leads, plodding tempo and a crushing atmosphere makes this one of the best for 2005 IMHO! Especially "Ashes of Innocence" which starts off rather mellow and lulls you into a sense of secure melancholy till the crushing riffage starts. Excellent track! They are all excellent (again IMHO). Great job to Frederic and company! Outstanding stuff here! Very somber/crushing stuff. A lovely dismal listening experience! (Mike Soucy)

L'album dei Longing For Dawn rappresenta il debutto per la neonata Twilight Foundation, costola consacrata al doom della canadese Cyclic Law, e si impone immediatamente come un lavoro di pregevole fattura sia sotto il punto di vista compositivo che interpretativo. Curato e ricercato nel suo incedere ossessivo, il sound dei canadesi si avvolge sinuoso in spire di doom atmosferico al contempo malinconico e sulfureo, vero e proprio viatico per la dannazione eterna dallo struggente sapore decadente ma mai stucchevole. Ad aprire le danze nel primo brano troviamo una brevissima partitura ambient, a ricordarci il legame con la label madre Cyclic Law, cui si sovrappone lentamente un riffing ispirato dal sapore ossianico accompagnato da una voce growl da manuale del perfetto doomster. Da questo momento ha inizio una vera e propria discesa negli inferi della psiche umana, abbellita dalle struggenti melodie che ne punteggiano i momenti salienti e ne affrescano le volte, per una visione di insieme tanto opprimente quanto affascinante. Pur nel suo essere ancorata ai dogmi del genere, quest'opera prima a firma Longing For Dawn si distingue per il lavoro di rifinitura delle singole parti e per una cura maniacale dei particolari, regalandoci autentici cammei di doom sepolcrale. Un album che presenta al mondo una band dalle enormi potenzialità e convince sin dal primo ascolto, facendo ben sperare anche per la label con cui ha deciso di condividere questo incredibile affresco in note.
