editor of print magazine VIAL. The music on the inside of the cover
is deserving of such fine adornment. Symphonic fire, industrial poison,
and gothic beauty entertwine to create something positively addictive.
The opening track, Somniferum, begins with a forewarning cast by the
mad street preacher..."novice to this mystery, heed my warning
from the start..." The warning is just, as the album's subject,
the opium poppy, is as cruel as it is beautiful. And so is the music
on SOMNIFERUM. From Middle Eastern rythyms that conjure the flower
from the ground, to the serenity of an opium high, the title track
culminates in a bombastic ending of industrial poison that recreates
wicked flower's hold. The ensuing tracks continue to elaborate on
the theme as addiction becomes inevitable. Johann BC uses a variety
of voices to capture the mood of each piece. The songs have immediate
attractions and hold the listener over with well planned keyboard
and guitar phrases. And the drums and bass drive the listener headlong
down the twisted opium trail.
